The Great Eastern Railway (GER) were the first company to display maps in their carriages just after 1900. The railways realised that there was little point in encouraging travel in the future to the scenic views displayed, if the passengers weren't even sure where they were at the time! In later years similar route diagrams evolved from these maps.
