As a change from the usual scenic views, the London Midland Region of British Rail implemented two series of 'Historical' prints in the early and mid 1950s. The 'Travel-In' series of 24 by Cuthbert Hamilton-Ellis, featured views of the transport associated with some of the pre-grouping companies which formed the LMS. The 'History' series depicted 48 images by 4 artists, showing important historical events in the London Midland Region.
A third Historical series featuring famous "Engineers" was commissioned around 1955 from artist Reg Smythe who later became world famous for his "Andy Capp" cartoons in the Daily Mirror.
In the end, these were never issued by the LMR publicity department but we have included them here as a unique reference.
