Rowland Hilder (PRI, RSMA 1905-1993)

Landscape & marine painter, illustrator, author. Born 28/6/1905 at Great Neck, Long Island, USA, of British parents. Educated at Morristown, New Jersey. Settled England 1915 and studied at Goldsmiths College School of Art under E.J.Sullivan 1922-25. Work was first selected for RA in 1923 when only 18. Married Edith Blenkiron, also a painter. Represented in several public collections here and abroad and is renowned for his paintings of Kentish oast houses. Was President of RI 1964-74. Illustrated many books incl. 'Moby Dick' 1926, 'Treasure Island' 1930, 'The Shell Guide to Flowers of the Countryside' etc. Worked for Artist's Partners Agency, London. Designed National Savings and Shell Oil posters and illustrated the Army Manual on Camouflage. Wrote books on watercolour technique and an autobiography 'Rowland Hilder, Painter & Illustrator'. Lived in Blackheath, London for many years. Died April 1993. Produced posters for SR and the Post Office.

Produced artwork for LNER Pre-War series.
